Virginia law requires contractors to have a state license – not just a local business license – for most contracting work or bids over $1000.
Before you hire a contractor, sign a contract or pay for work in your home, make sure you are dealing with a competent professional who is licensed and insured.
The Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) website provides information regarding the licensee,
complaint histories, and disciplinary actions involving licensees. Go to www.dpor.virginia.gov and click on License Lookup.
The DPOR website also provides information and resources for consumer protection. Protect yourself from fraud and find out what to do if you’ve been a victim or want to file a complaint. Visit www.dpor.virginia.gov or call the Contractors Board at (804) 367-8511.
